I was going to be a fighter pilot. Or possibly a grocer.

Giles was born in the mid-fifties to an upper middle class couple in England. He is an only child. The first ten years of his life were fairly normal, but it was when he was ten that everything changed. Until this point he knew nothing about vampires, demons, the occult or the Council despite the fact that both his father and paternal grandmother were Watchers. When he was ten his mother was killed by a demon, a murder that was intended to punish Edna Giles, grandmother to Rupert. The little boy wasn't allowed to simply grieve like any other child; his father decided that it was time for his son to understand the world that he was born into, and what he was destined to become. After the funeral was over there was a long one-sided talk in the library, dashing young Giles' hopes at growing up to be a fighter pilot (or green grocer.) From that day on home life became an unofficial training ground for the future Watcher. It was his mother who was the tender one, and he lost that comfort the day she died.

For more then a decade Giles lived the life that was set for him. He went to school, studied demonology and vampire lore with his father on holidays and had a limited social life. He saw his grandmother infrequently but they got on well. After secondary school he was accepted at Oxford, where he attended university for three years. Then, at the age of 21, he left. Left school, left the Watcher Academy which he was training at on holidays, much as he had trained with his father in his youth, and left behind all contact with his family...

Then Ethan and I discovered something... bigger.

It was Giles who found the texts regarding Eygon, Ethan who tattooed everyone and convinced them to participate, volunteering to be the first host. The ritual of Eygon was the most amazing, empowering thing any of them had ever felt. An "extraordinary high" he would tell Buffy some years later. And then things went horribly wrong. They grew lax in their ritual, less concerned about safety and more intent on the need for the high. Eygon found a hole in their guard and he used it to take over one of the group, the weakest link, Randall. It killed Randall. This was a wake up call for Giles, and within a week of Randall's death (and subsequent secret burial complete with protection spells to keep Eygon from ever returning) Giles returned to his old life.

Now he's gone (perhaps too far) in the opposite direction. This violent side is unleashed only on rare occasion, as is his practice of magic (both are rooted in the same place.) They are brought out by one of three things; a loss of inhibition (drugs, spells or band candy) grief (attacking Angeleus with a baseball bat after Jenny's death) or the need to protect. When Buffy is in danger he beats up Ethan. When Snyder won't let Buffy return to school he shoves the principle against a file cabinet. When the Mayor comes to the library Giles runs him through with a foil. There are no limits to which he won't go for Buffy and the rest of his adopted family (even almost killing himself to save Willow when she goes evil.)
Giles is sent to Sunnydale to be Watcher to the newest Slayer after her first Watcher, Merrick, is killed. He is everything the Council taught him to be - well versed in lore, ready to train his Slayer, send her on missions and record the outcome in his journals. Buffy is nothing like he expected, nor was he prepared for the fact that she was not going to fight the vampires alone. Rather then watching Giles found himself as a part of a team - a team that became a family. Buffy, Xander, Willow and himself form the core of a group that comes to include many others as they fight mater vampires, love gone wrong, ghosts, invisible girls, witches, demons, a god, an evil trio and the First Evil. And they're not done fighting yet...

eru·dite: having or showing a wide knowledge gained from reading; learned; scholarly

Giles is from the TV show Buffy the Vampire Slayer. He is a creation of Joss Whedon and does not belong to me. I am not making any money from this journal or any writing/role play.

Giles main canon point is season six, sometime between Flooded and Tabula Rasa.

For [info]taxonomites he is set just a few weeks post the series finale.

He can, depending on who he's playing against, be anywhere in canon from the beginning to the end of the second arc of the season 8 comics.
